I got the best phone call this morning. Bereket is back at his family’s house. I don’t know any details, but he is safe! I just love this little boy and am so relieved he is ok. I can’t wait to wrap my arms around him. I don’t know how parents do what they do with grace. I want to jump up and down with joy, yell at him, hug him, ask him what was he thinking, punish him, throw a party that he is ok… Mostly, I just can’t wait to see him.

Is there any possibility of you being able to adopt him and bring him to the U.S.? I realize that that is a huge undertaking but from outside looking in it would be like a fairy tale.
I am not sure that adoption is the best option. Maybe I feel that way because it also isn’t an option. He has a family and his family loves him, they just struggle taking care of each other. Sometimes with poverty it may seem that love/caring/compassion, what ever you may want to call it, is lacking. In his situation, it is resources. If I help his family, there still isn’t a school nearby, so the cycle continues. Access to food and school are daily struggles for many in the country side. I don’t have a good answer. It is a simply stated problem, but the best way to fix them… complex.
What a lucky little boy he is to have your love. He looks so happy. You are a remarkable person. I’m proud to call you friend!
yay!!! Yes, parenting is the craziest most awesome thing ever- whether they are children you have yourself- or those who become your children from the immense love in your heart!
So awesome. Praise God!
So glad to hear this!
Well Stephanie, that is EXACTLY what parents do! Blessings!
So glad he is safe and your worries are lifted for now. Prayers for safe travels and continued celebrations!
Thank God he is safe! I am so happy that Kebede was able to find him. Love you Stephanie, you are such an amazing person.

Hello Dr. Hail. My name is Emily Buster I’ve been a long time reader of your blog! I adopted my son from Ethiopia in 2010 and he was born in the Awassa area. I currently serve on the board of the Studio Samuel Foundation and I would love to chat with you in more detail as our long term plans involve maternal health. Here is the website for Studio Samuel.
