I love you, Steph! Hope you are doing well. Thinking about you and praying for you everyday!
Lauren
So glad to hear you made it 🙂 Sorry spooning w/the natives isn’t as much fun as spooning w/me but what did you expect?! After boards on MOn, I will have more time to devote to my lemonade stand to raise funds to visit you. . .
Love you!

Hey Steph – If you weren’t a doc you could be a writer. You write beautifully. I think of you every time I drive down Ruddiman. Take care and be safe.
Kathy
Lol. Thanks Kathy. If for some reason I can’t continue to be a doc at least I know one person who might buy a book I write. I almost called you before I left to say good bye to my first “best friend” in Muskegon! Hope you have a happy new year!
Miss you!
Hey hun! I was so excited when Heidi sent out the address to your blog a while back. However, when I logged on you hadn’t posted anything yet… and I fogot to look again… until today…
After finishing up with patients, I looked at the Carnes’ blog and I saw that you didn’t get your license approved. So then I quickly found Heidi’s old email and logged back onto this blog….
I hope things are going well and that you have been approved for an Ethopian license. I will say a little prayer for you that things work out and you are able to get the needed papers/etc. that you need to work at the hospital.
It was nice to read all your postings to see how you have been doing. I hope you had a lovely “Gregorian” holiday season. Kyle and I talked about you around Christmas time and we were trying to figure out how to get ahold of you. I don’t know if you have an address we can send mail to or if this is your only contact. Please let us know. I miss you and hope you are doing well. Anthony is growing like a weed (if the weed is in the 5th percentile for weight and the 85th percentile for height). Of course, I adore him and cannot wait to get out of work to see him! 🙂 I hope to hear from you soon!
Lots of Love,
Bonnie
I was just thinking about my first Christmas in Muskegon with you and your family over the holidays. I tried to find you on facebook, but couldn’t. I will find out more on my license early next week. Thanks for your prayers!
Not on Facebook… I know, everyone says I need to.
Good morning. My name is Jim Corbett. I work with an organization in Boston called Refugee Immigration Ministry (RIM). We work with refugees sent to this area and help them get settled, find work, school, medical assistance ect. I am hosting a family who just arrived here from the camp in Kenya. The father is from Soddo and… has 2 brothers and hopefully his father as well is still there in Soddo. His father was a well known evangelist in Soddo who also ran a medical clinic. He has not seen them in many years and would like to let them know he is ok and has 2 daughters. Is there any way you can help me or refer me to who can help me find his father and brothers in Soddo? We looked at Soddo last night on Google Earth, it is a big town and has grown much since this son was there but he still knew his way around. Any guidance you can provide will be very much appreciated. Thank you and God bless you. Jim
Jim,
I would absolutely love to help him find his family. What is his father’s and brothers’ names? If you don’t want this to be public you may send it to my email hailstephanie@hotmail.com. If I can find them we could set up a skype date, so they can actually talk and see each other.
Stephanie,
Thank you again for your reply! I sent you an e-mail on Jan 29 with more details and contact information. I hope you got it. Please leave a post if you did or didn’t and I wwill re-send if needed.
Peace,
Jim
I got your email and have talked to some people here in the administration of the hospital. One said he knows of his dad and would get the info to his church. I am just waiting to hear back. i will keep you updated.
Thank you Stephanie. That is so great. Dawit will be so excited. I wil tell him at breakfast.
And thank you for sharing the story of the little infant you cared for during her short and tragic life. You being there at that moment made all the diference. And the happy ending is that she is with Jesus now and will be standing next to him someday to welcome you home.
I would like to learn more about your mission and how perhaps I can be of some help.
Look forward to hearing from you.
Jim,
I have found Dawit’s family. Check you email.
stephanie
hi stephanie, I just started getting Dr. Karnes’ newsletter, and started thinking about you…I remember you delivering my daughter, Makenna, 4 years ago, on YOUR birthday, and wanted to wish you a belated Happy Birthday! I pray God’s blessing on you & the ministry the hospital has with the women of Ethiopia.
Jen Beggs
Thank you for the birthday wishes. It is always fun to deliver babies on your own birthday. Tell Makenna I said happy belated birthday!
Hi Stephenie,
This is Dawit. thankyou for your coopretion to get my family face to face today.
I planed to send some gift through you again to my fatherr so that he can give thanks to God with his home church.
So the gift to be given direct to my father but not any body else.
Thank you.
Dawit Neka Dabulo
Hello Dawit! It was so wonderful to be a part of your families reunion after all these years. I will make sure your father gets your gift. If it is a financial gift I would like you to send it to my mother in the states and I can then give the money to your father. Money sometimes shows up missing in the mail.
hi stephenie,my name is mulusew mathewos, one of the family of dawit neka.last time my family notified that he is alive and you helped them to find him,so i really appreciate you and i would like you to say God bless you.
mulusew
Mulusew,
I felt so honored to get to meet your family and to be a part of the reunion! God Bless you and your family!
I do not know you but your blog was forwarded to me. I am a pastor and run a ministry specifically designed to equip and train pastors and leaders. Our training varies and we build our training teams to suit needs.
I do not know if this would serve your work there but I do know that when you can lift the heart and head of a pastor you can influence his whole church. A healthy church can impact a village.
We come free of charge, usually underwrite any training we provide and try to tackle some kind of compassion based project. (medical supplies or tools, mosquito nets, neviropine,…)
If we can serve you other than prayer let us know. God bless!
Leonard Lee
What you say about the influence of a pastor is so true. What the churches teach, the people do, or at least try to do. I do not know what to ask for you to do other than pray. I have written this message and erased it about 5 times because I don’t even know what to tell you to pray about… the leaders, the orphans, the street kids…
Steph, I am with you so lets just commit to pray. I will be in Nigeria in July and India in August and in South America during OCT/NOV.
Each of these trips I will be training pastors. In Nigeria I will be working in partnership with a clinic.
Who knows, maybe the Lord will open a door for our ministry to partner with you in Ethiopia. While in Swaziland last year we found that training pastors was helpful to the medical work of the pharmacist (they did not have a doctor) because in got more people involved in the care of others.
God bless you.
You really do have a busy schedule! I am so glad you are able to help in the way you are.
Thought of you today…I pray for you often. Hope all is well! God Bless the work you are doing Stephanie…and when your done come move back to Michigan and come practice at Gerber with me and Tami!!!
Hi Stephanie,
I just recently discovered your blog, and am more or less reading it beginning to end – my husband and I are in the process of adopting a little girl from ET, and I am on a quest to learn more about her country.
I am also an artist, and am painting lots of pictures of Ethiopian children. Do I have permission to paint some of the photos you have on your blog? They are not photo-identical paintings, but rather, watercolor illustrations. You can see some examples of my paintings in my Etsy shop – http://www.mossyrockdesigns.etsy.com to get an idea of what I do.
Thank you so much for the wonderful work you are doing.
Katie
Katie,
Sorry for the delayed response. I will need to talk to the director of the orphanage and have not had a chance to yet. I did look at your Etsy shop though and I think it is a wonderful idea. I just have to ask. I will email you with in the next week. If you do not hear from me before then please send me a reminder… hailstephanie@hotmail.com.
I just happened to come by your blog from my “step sister” Kelly Trombley. I am touched to the core by what you do. Every post you make saddens me, but also makes me truley grateful for what I have, especially my 3 healthy beautiful children. Besides donating for the “facelift” fund, please let me know if there is anything I can do to help with donations…cloths, school supplies, ect
Hi Dr Stephen this is Girma, the family member of Dawit Dabulo’s family.
I’ve seen written communication with Jim Corbett and Dawit told me your hard work to get my family.
Thank you very much God bless you !
Girma M.
God bless you your work in Ethiopia
Stephanie, you don’t remember me – Your Mother attended our church in Baton Rouge when you were born. I kept you and your brother when you were less than 2 years 0ld (still in diapers) but cute as a button. You had a long white sleeping gown with a drawstring at the bottom. Your Mom worried that you would cry for her while she was on a two or three day retreat. You did not shed a tear!!! You were happy and loved to play hide-and-seek. You were not talking much, but would say “Boo” when you were found in your hiding place! So proud of you now and will be praying for you. I was Mrs Barbara [Ford Boone] (He passed away in 1995) – 12 moved from Baton Rouge to Jackson, MS in 1982. I have since remarried and am Barbara Boone Jones. Love you
Mrs. Barbara,
Thanks for taking care of me and John so long ago. I am certain that John was the one that would be a handful!!! 😉 I will have to ask my mom about you. I am sorry that you lost your husband. I cannot imagine the kind of loss you must feel with that, but I am glad you were able to find a new mate to continue life with. Just having someone to share times with is so important. love, stephanie
Stephanie —
I have a box of crocheted newborn hats to send to you. Mom (Barbara Jones) and I have been making these – well, she more than I – she flies when she crochets, I putter. 😀 I wanted to check with you first to see if you have to pay a duty when it arrives. If so, can I make a ‘donation’ through this site to help with the duty cost? Just let me know what is the best way to send this to you and how else we can help.
There is no duty on the hats. THANK YOU!
Steph, I have been admiring your compassion, your generousity, your determination to improve the lives of many so less fortunate than I. I am so grateful for your efforts and understand that a connection to those of other peoples and societies has a place in our everyday lives. I pray for your wisdom and continued hopefulness. Stephanie
My children are from Wolaita and we want to visit the area for a couple weeks this summer. We want to join a mission or find some project to work on while we are there. Do you know of any groups we could join? or have any ideas of a project we could come help on.
Thanks for any info

I guess the first thing to ask is what your interests and skills are. Do you know the dates you will be here? How old is everyone in the family?
Stephanie
We don’t have a date yet. We will be flexible on that. My kids are 13 and 15. They no longer speak the native language there. I can’t think of any skills we could add. But we could do something like help kids read, read the bible in English, teach Math, organize sporting events, teach sports, or help build something where you just need some manual labor. I am not sure how useful helping teach school subjects since we only speak English, but hopefully God will find a way to put us to work. Thanks for keeping us in mind.
Katherine
Dear Dr. Steph–
I don’t know if your hospital (or World Visions?) would be eligible to apply for some of the goods offered by the USAID “Limited Excess Property Program,” but I thought of you (and your patients) when I learned about it. Deadline for the current cycle is March 12, 2012; here’s the link: http://idea.usaid.gov/ls/limited-excess-property-program/.
Also, do you still need baby hats? How about washable feminine hygiene kits? I know money is probably the best way to help, but I find that my hands need work to do, also.
Sending you strength and light.
jennifer,
thanks for the information. I will look into it. As far as hats go, I have enough for about a year, maybe a bit less. Many women here use a piece of material for pads. One of the things that people have been sending that I will have enough of for about a month is receiving blankets. The biggest issue with anything that is made is simply the shipping costs. Most of the boxes that are sent to me are anywhere from $100-$250 just for the shipping.
Thanks and Blessings!
Hey Stephanie,
I’m not sure if you remember me but you were in our ABF at Olivet. I was moved by your talk at Olivet last month. It got me thinking. At Reeths-Puffer High School(where I teach), so many kids leave clothes laying around the school that eventually gets pitched. I know you community could use these. I would love to organize and get this stuff to you. Do you know if there is a process or economical way to ship clothing to you? Let me know your ideas.
thanks
Dee Richardson
Dee, of course I remember you! I wish there was an economical way to get the clothes! Sadly, it is just expensive to ship stuff here. I think the cheapest way is if someone is coming to Ethiopia to pay $200 for an extra bag. The only thing that I can think of is you announced to the kids that all the lost and found clothes are going to Ethiopia to street kids. Suggest that everyone donates a dollar to ship them. They may be willing to do that.
Stephanie,
I stumbled across your blog and began following it as a fellow physician interested in missions in Ethiopia. My husband and I are leaving for Ethiopia later this week to bring our newly adopted daughter home. We are taking a side trip to Soddo Sunday through Wednesday, March 18-21st to visit the Mossy Foot Project and bring a couple of suitcases of elastic bandages to them. I just thought I would touch base with you. We would be glad to bring something you need from the States or just meet up with you while we are there. If you want you may email me at stacy dot dashiell at gmail dot com.
Stacy
So sorry I missed you! I tried to send you an email, but I must have typed in the wrong address. I hope your trip to Ethiopia was wonderful!
